Although they were in perfectly good health, these 2 cedar trees were to be removed as part of a redevelopment at a local nursery. For safety and to minimise disruption the work was carried out over a weekend. The nursery were keen to reuse the tree in as many ways as possible so much of the timber was left in large segments to be used as seating. The stems were also left at around 3 metres and are to be carved by a local artist. A den building area was also being planned so we left some of the smaller branches too.

Deadwooding a Music Festival site | Cotswolds, Gloucs

This small music festival in the Cotswolds is held next to one of the UK’s largest solar farms. We were contracted to go down to the site in the weeks prior to remove all significant deadwood from the various trees around the site and make them safe before the campers arrived. Over 4 days we crown lifted and removed deadwood from over 40 trees, mainly Poplars. A large number of these were close to the LV power lines so it was arranged for the power to be cut whilst we completed the work.
It was a beautiful spot with plenty of wildlife – deer, owls, kestrels and plenty of rabbits. There was even a couple of hammocks for break time!

March until Sept is the generally accepted nesting season for birds. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to disturb any nesting bird. During this period we are often required to postpone jobs whilst we wait for birds to fledge. The most common bird we encounter is, not unsurprisingly, the pigeon. This conifer job was prime pigeon nest territory so a pre-work inspection was carried out to ensure that there were no active nests present. Many customers are surprised that pigeons are covered by these regulations as to many they are considered ‘vermin of the skies’, regardless of your view of pigeons the Act covers ALL birds – and squirrels.
As it turned out there were no nests on this particular job, but the day did turn out to be a long hot slog on what turned out to be the hottest day of the summer.

Crown lift of TPO Lime, Nottingham | Leaf Tree Services

This Lime tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Councils apply TPO’s to trees which are considered to have amenity value, or are of significant importance such as age, species or historical interest. Once a tree is protected by a TPO it is prohibited to carry out any works to the tree without consent from the local planning authority. It is also an offence to wilfully damage the tree in any way. A TPO can be applied to any tree of any species.
We were asked to carry out a crown lift to this mature Lime tree to make way for an extension to be built on the property. Applying for consent for works to a TPO’d tree is a straight forward process but does typically take a minimum of around 6 weeks

Tree Removal Nottingham |Storm damaged Lime tree, Wysall, Notts

This Small-leaved Lime tree was damaged in the high winds at the end of March, with one of its two main stems failing. This was due to an area of decay just above the main union of the stem, probably from an old pruning wound or where it had previously shed a branch. Luckily most of it had landed in the garden, although the council had had to clear the road on the day it went over. With the remaining tree now very unbalanced, and an increased risk of infection with such a large wound, it was agreed that the remaining tree was to be removed. As the location was within a Conservation Area, a new tree is to be planted in its place.

This orchard had been neglected for some time and was in need of some attention. Many of the trees had a large amount of deadwood in them, including one which had to removed completely. The wood chip was left as a mulch around the trees to aid with moisture retention. Hopefully we can now establish a cycle of winter pruning for the apples ad mid-summer for the soft fruits. We spent an very enjoyable 2 days here, secateurs and pruning saws were a welcome break from the chainsaws!

Although the drop zone in this garden was of a fair size, the sheer weight of oak timber meant that to protect the customers lawn we had to use the rigging kit to dismantle the tree. It did also mean we could take some much larger pieces which made life easier. Although all the timber still had to be barrowed all the way to the truck! Some pieces of the lower stem were left for the customer to be used as furniture.

Horse Chestnuts in the UK are currently facing a number of diseases and pests. The main two being Bleeding Canker and infection by the Leaf Miner Moth. Bleeding Canker is caused by the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv aesculi and can be fatal for the tree. The disease causes cankers on the bark and a characteristic bleeding. Although some trees do recover it is often fatal. In the later stages of infection the crown is affected with dieback of branches and yellowing of leaves. A Forestry Commission survey in 2007 found that just under half of the Horse Chestnuts in the East Midlands showed symptoms of the disease.

The Leaf Miner Moth (Cameraria ohridella) lays its eggs on the leaves of the Horse Chestnut and the larvae live within the leaves. Research has shown that the presence of the Leaf Miner poses no threat to the survival of the tree, although its does cause the leaves to turn brown, as if autumn has arrived early.

This tree in Leicestershire had been infected with canker for some time and we had been monitoring its decline. Due to the close proximity to the road and a well used footpath it was decided the time had come for removal. You can see from the pictures that large areas of bark had died leaving the tree open to further attack by fungi the live on standing dead wood.

Willow trees are quick growing and handle pruning well. Because of this Willow trees are often “pollarded’, a process where all the crown is removed back to either a single stem or leaving a basic branch structure as in this case. The regrowth after pollarding tends to be straight and upright. The origins of pollarding date back to medieval times when trees were pollarded to provide wood for making fence posts, rails etc. Willow trees were often pollarded to produce the material for basket weaving.

In modern times pollarding is a way of keeping trees at a manageable size. Once a cycle of pollarding is begun it is advisable to re-pollard every few years. New growth is often not anchored well into the stem and can easily snap out if left to become to heavy.

Unlike most pruning works, pollarding is best carried out in early spring once the fungi season has ended as the large wounds can be susceptible to infection.
